Anyway, you know... you should just go ahead and open the gift I got you. I’m booked up Christmas Day for now.

[ souji finally returns back to the table with two hot cups of coffee. does he know how to make the coffee suited to mako's tastes? probably. they're bffs, they should know this, right? but anyway, he sits down and hands mako his cup as he looks at the bag ]

You know you didn't have to get me a gift, right? Even if I'm pretty amazing.

Sounds like there are two competing thoughts in that statement, Souji.

[he takes the coffee between his hands, definitely letting it warm them... or getting a sense for how hot it was. But he takes a sip after a moment]

Oh, this is good.

But anyway, I wanted to.

[ he places his own cup of coffee on the table and then reaches for the gift bag. he gently opens it, reaching in to pull out the gifts and... oh my god... they're cat related but not just that, it's just so touching that mako has gone out and gotten these for him. to actually take the time and know what he would like (it's a no-brainer but still), it's sweet and there's a genuine smile on his face. no jokes, no nonsense, just a sincere smile and he looks up at mako, holding the keychain and tamaneko in his hands ]

he rests his chin in his palm as Souji looks through the gifts. He’s pretty glad Souji likes them, he was a little worried that maybe he was being too obvious.

But he didn’t really have a choice but to get him a gift. Not least because he’s never had a friend as close as him before.]

[ souji takes a few more seconds, just looking down at his gifts with such fondness. he then places them on the table and stands up from his seat ]

Hold on just a second.

[ he leaves the kitchen area and disappears upstairs for a few minutes. by the time he does return, he comes back with a rather big gift bag and he sets it in front of mako ]

[his eyes widen a little bit at the large box, coffee mid gulp. He couldn’t tell Souji that he shouldn’t have, after his gift but...]

[this looked like it might have been way too much to spend on him.]

[ souji sits back down and just smiles, shaking his head ]

Christmas isn't about receiving gifts, Mako. It's about giving.

[ souji knows a lot about giving but not much about receiving, though ]

[he pauses, letting the words settle and then wondering aloud,]

Should... I open this now?

[this was the first time he’d really received a gift outside of the ones Bolin gave him, honestly... he didn’t know the etiquette here.]

[ he nods as he takes a sip of his coffee. unfortunately, souji didn't have the time to properly wrap the gift since mako came with little notice but there's tissue paper covering the top of the bag, hiding whatever's inside. when taken out, mako will see a red scarf, folded neatly, sitting on top of a brand new coffee maker. on the box of the coffee maker is a sticky note that reads "PROPERTY OF MAKO LOU. HANDS OFF, BOLIN ٩(ఠ益ఠ)۶" ]

[he’s pretty touched, honestly. He hadn’t even thought about the coffee maker after he and Bolin had made up, and yet here Souji was, trying to make sure his brother couldn’t pull that stunt again? Even after everything. He grins just a bit at the thought. The scarf, however, reminded him a little of the one he wore in his memories. His father’s memento...]

You know, this is the first gift I’ve gotten from someone other than Bo. And it’s one telling him he can’t touch it.

[he loves it]

[ souji lets out a small laugh ]

Does that mean you like it?

Yeah. Definitely.

[look, honestly, it's nice to relax around friends. And his guard definitely falls for Souji, especially after that.]

Thanks for feeding our brotherly rivalry, or at least saving me from when he goes on the rampage again.

If he even dares to lay a finger on it, call me immediately. I will make sure to straighten him out for you with a little Souji and Persona intimidation magic.

[he laughs.]

I'll let him know. He's still going to try, though, just so you know. It's... just the way our relationship is.

[ souji laughs alongside him. yeah, from what he has learned of bolin from mako, their sibling relationship really does seem like it ]

Do you two often play pranks on each other?

[he smiles a bit.]

We used to. Bolin still tries more often than not.

[it's a little wistful.]

After mom and dad died... It stopped. But once we got out of the foster system, that's when it started to get better.

[ ah, "after mom and dad died"... souji knows that can't be an easy topic for mako to talk about, especially know how mako is, but for him to bring it up so casually around souji, it's... kind of nice. to see that they share that kind of trust between them ]

I can't imagine that foster care was very kind.
